Primary Megacolon (Hirschsprung Disease)

Hirschsprung disease shows familial tendency. Males are more prone to it as compared to female. Child fails to pass meconium and abdomen becomes distended. Sigmoid colon is greatly distended and hypertrophied. The symptoms usually appear during the first few days after the birth. Rectum and anal canal are constricted . It is constricted segment of the bowel that causes the obstruction. Histological examination reports a complete failure of development of the parasympathetic ganglion cells in this region. The treatment is surgical excision of the aganglionic part of the bowel.
